Most redesign disasters aren't design problems. They're sequence problems: rankings lost to missing redirects, forms nobody tested, analytics gaps right when you need proof it worked. This is the order.

Common questions

Website redesign questions, answered.

It can, and the causes are usually process mistakes: a forgotten redirect map, a staging noindex tag shipped to production, or pages that earned links dropped without a redirect. Crawl the old site first, keep URLs unless there is a strategic reason to change them, map every changed URL one to one, and check the robots meta before launch. A small ranking wobble for a few weeks is normal. Follow the 28-step redesign checklist.

Write down the goal, benchmark the current site and decide who writes the content. A goal like “demo requests flatlined” gives every later decision a target. Record traffic, top landing pages, conversions, rankings and Core Web Vitals so you can prove the redesign worked. Settle the content plan early, since content is the #1 cause of redesign delays, and put a mobile PageSpeed target in the contract. See the first phase of our checklist.

Watch Search Console daily for two weeks and compare analytics against your pre-launch benchmark. Right after the switch, spot-check redirects on the live site, submit the new sitemap and crawl for 404s. Traffic that craters points to a missed redirect or an indexing issue, and it needs finding that day. Then schedule a 30-day review of conversions, Core Web Vitals field data and small fixes. Request a free audit if you want a second opinion.
