Why your WooCommerce store traffic isn’t converting (and how to find your leak)

Your ads are working, your traffic is real, and your revenue doesn't match either. The problem is almost never the traffic. It's what the traffic lands on.

This is the most expensive problem in e-commerce because you’re paying for it twice: once for the click, and once in the sale that didn’t happen. A store converting at 0.8% with solid traffic doesn’t have a marketing problem. It has a website problem wearing a marketing problem’s clothes.

Average e-commerce conversion sits between 2% and 3%, according to Dynamic Yield’s benchmark data. If you’re meaningfully below that with real purchase-intent traffic, one or more of these seven leaks is open. Here’s how to find yours, in the order we check them during store audits.

1. Speed: they leave before they see it

In Portent’s 2022 study, sites that loaded in 1 second had an e-commerce conversion rate 2.5 times higher than sites that loaded in 5 seconds. Check your mobile PageSpeed on a product page, not the homepage. If it’s under 50, stop reading and fix this first: nothing else on this list matters to a visitor who already left. Our speed optimization work starts with the same check, on mobile and desktop.

2. Mobile checkout that fights the thumb

Most store traffic is mobile, and mobile checkout is where neglect shows first. Tiny tap targets, forms that trigger the wrong keyboard, shipping calculated at the last step, no express payments. Walk your own mobile checkout tonight with your least patient thumb. Apple Pay and Google Pay above the fold lift mobile conversion because they delete the entire form.

3. Product pages that describe instead of sell

  • One studio photo where buyers need six angles and a size reference
  • Manufacturer boilerplate instead of answers to the three questions stopping the purchase
  • No reviews visible, or worse, zero reviews on the page at all
  • Shipping cost and delivery time hidden until checkout, the #1 stated reason for abandonment in Baymard Institute’s survey

The fix is unglamorous: better photos, buyer-question-driven copy, reviews pulled onto the page, and shipping information stated where the buying decision happens.

4. Forced account creation

Requiring registration before purchase is the single most damaging checkbox in WooCommerce settings. Guest checkout as the default, with an optional ‘save my details’ after the order, keeps the sale and still grows your customer base. This is a two-minute settings change.

5. Trust gaps a stranger can see

You know you’re legitimate. A first-time visitor doesn’t. No physical address in the footer, no return policy near the buy button, a checkout that looks different from the rest of the site, an SSL warning on one asset: each is small; together they read as risk. Fixes cost almost nothing, which makes this the best ROI section on this list.

6. The traffic-to-page mismatch

Sometimes conversion is fine and targeting isn’t: ads for a specific product landing on the homepage, cold social traffic hitting a full-price product page, brand keywords pointed at category pages. Check your paid landing paths in analytics. Every click should land on the page that matches its intent, and campaign-specific landing pages outconvert generic destinations every time we test them.

7. No recovery layer

Even a healthy store loses most of its carts: Baymard Institute’s average cart abandonment rate is about 70%. The difference between mature stores and struggling ones is what happens next: abandoned cart emails win back part of that lost revenue, and post-purchase flows turn one-time buyers into repeat buyers, and repeat rates change the whole P&L. If you have no recovery flows, you’re running a store with no bottom in the funnel.

Finding your specific leak

Don’t guess. Measure in order: mobile product-page speed first, then the funnel report (where exactly do visitors exit?), then a recorded session sample watching real people struggle. The leak is usually visible within an hour of honest looking. Fixing it is what our WooCommerce team does, and the fix usually costs a fraction of one month’s wasted ad spend.
