Divi to Elementor: the complete migration guide (from a team that’s done 80+)

There's no magic converter between page builders. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something broken. Here's what a real migration involves and how to not lose your rankings doing it.

Divi to Elementor is the most common builder migration we do, 80+ projects and counting. The three reasons people switch stay consistent: performance (Divi’s front-end output is heavier), workflow (Elementor’s editor is faster for teams), and talent (more developers know Elementor well).

First, the honest part: this is a rebuild, not a conversion. Divi stores content as Divi shortcodes; Elementor stores it as structured JSON. No plugin translates one to the other cleanly. Every ‘Divi to Elementor converter’ we’ve tested produces output you’d have to rebuild anyway, except now it’s full of junk markup.

What transfers and what gets rebuilt

Asset Transfers?
Posts, pages, media library Yes, WordPress core content is builder-independent
SEO metadata (titles, descriptions) Yes, lives in your SEO plugin, not the builder
URLs and permalink structure Yes, unchanged (protect it with redirect checks anyway)
Page layouts and designs No, rebuilt in Elementor
Divi Theme Builder templates (headers, footers) No, rebuilt in Elementor Theme Builder
Contact forms Partially, form entries usually rebuilt in a dedicated form plugin

The shortcode trap (the part everyone underestimates)

Deactivate Divi and every page built with it renders as a wall of raw shortcodes: [et_pb_section][et_pb_row]… Your content is inside there, wrapped in markup only Divi understands. The migration has to extract clean content from every page, and any page you forget renders as garbage the moment Divi goes away.

This is why the sequence matters: build the new Elementor versions on staging while Divi keeps running production, then switch once everything is rebuilt and QA’d. Never deactivate first and rebuild second.

The migration sequence that protects SEO

  1. Full crawl and inventory: every URL, its title, meta description, and current rankings. This is your acceptance checklist.
  2. Clone to staging. All rebuild work happens there.
  3. Rebuild global elements first (header, footer, theme styles) in Elementor Theme Builder with a design system (colors, type, spacing as globals, not per-page settings).
  4. Rebuild pages in priority order: money pages, then high-traffic content, then the long tail.
  5. Extract content from Divi shortcodes as you go, cleaning junk markup instead of copying it forward.
  6. Keep URLs identical. Where a URL must change, map a 301. Verify heading structure and metadata page by page against the inventory.
  7. QA on staging: forms, mobile layouts, PageSpeed on key templates (this is where the performance win should already show).
  8. Launch, recrawl, and watch Search Console for 404s and coverage changes for two weeks.

What it costs and how long it takes

A 10-20 page business site runs 2-4 weeks. Bigger sites with WooCommerce or Theme Builder complexity run 4-8. Done professionally, expect $1,800 to $6,000 depending on page count, with the design refresh most sites take as part of the rebuild included in that range. The performance delta is typically visible immediately: one 12-attorney firm we migrated went from a 41 to a 97 mobile PageSpeed score and onto page 1 for eight practice-area keywords.

DIY or hire it out? If you have one small site and some patience, the sequence above is completely doable yourself. If the site is how clients find you, weigh the risk of learning on production. Our Divi to Elementor service is fixed-price with rankings protected in the scope.
