About the Client
ProductDock AG is a Berlin-based software development company that specializes in outsourcing and building nearshore software development teams. Everything they sell runs through one WordPress site that showcases eight service lines, three collaboration models, open roles, and a technical blog their own engineers write. The website is in two languages, so German buyers and English-speaking buyers land on separate versions of every page.
About WCAG
WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. It is the international standard for making websites usable by people with disabilities, including people who rely on screen readers, keyboard navigation, captions, or higher color contrast. WCAG 2.1 AA is the version of the guidelines that cover whether the website content can be accessed, navigated, and interacted with, whether the information and interface are clear, and if the site works reliably with assistive technologies.
The Challenge
This was not a general request to make the site accessible. The audit gave us 92 specific issues to resolve, ranging from high-severity blockers to smaller semantic and usability problems.
Issues listed for each of the four WCAG principles:
- Perceivable: 53 issues, including missing alt text and insufficient color contrast.
- Operable: 28 issues, including keyboard traps and focus problems.
- Understandable: 4 issues, including unclear heading structures.
- Robust: 8 issues involving markup and components that assistive technology could not reliably interpret.
Our Approach
We worked on each of the 92 issues found, rather than adding an accessibility overlay or treating the issues as a visual checklist.
Keyboard navigation
We fixed the header sub-menu, embedded videos, chat tools, and other interactive elements so they could be operated entirely from a keyboard. We also removed keyboard traps caused by video overlays.
Focus management
We corrected how focus behaved when users opened filters, carousels, and search inputs. Focus was preserved or moved to the correct element instead of leaving keyboard and screen-reader users without a clear position on the page.
Forms
We corrected field labels, error handling, and focus placement so forms could be completed and errors understood without relying on sight.
Contrast
We brought text and background combinations up to WCAG AA contrast thresholds, including smaller text where insufficient contrast was particularly difficult to detect visually.
Alt text and custom components
We added meaningful alt text to informative images, used empty alt attributes for decorative images, and added appropriate ARIA labels and roles to custom interface elements.
Headings and semantics
We corrected the heading hierarchy and semantic structure so screen readers could understand the page and move through its content in a logical order.
Search and filtering
We made search inputs keyboard-accessible and ensured filtering changes were communicated to assistive technology instead of happening silently.
How We Verified the Fixes
We tackled the high- and medium-severity issues first, then worked through the remaining lower-severity issues before running a final accessibility pass.
Testing went beyond automated scanning. We used:
- VoiceOver for real screen-reader testing.
- Accessibility Insights for structured accessibility checks.
- Contrast checkers for color and text contrast.
- Keyboard-only navigation to verify that interactive elements could be reached and operated without a mouse.
Automated scanners are useful for finding some WCAG issues, but they do not tell you what it is like to actually use the site with a keyboard or screen reader, so we tested both.
The Outcome and Value
After all 92 issues were resolved, ProductDock’s website was brought in line with the relevant accessibility requirements and industry standards. Visitors who rely on keyboards or assistive technologies can now navigate the site, understand its content, complete forms, and move through the sales funnel without the barriers identified in the audit. That makes the website accessible to a wider audience, giving more potential customers the ability to discover ProductDock’s services and become their clients.
